Warning
Q. I've received an email from my fiancee in Afghanistan, and he wants me to request leave for him. This doesn't sound legit. Is it?
A. This is a growing "Lonely Hearts Scam" perpetrated on the generosity and trust of good people. It is disquised in many forms, but usually ends up in a request for money. Avoid at all cost.
Authorized Patrons
Q. As a retired DOD Civilian I still would like to join MWR and visit there occasionally, could you please give me relevant information on how to obtain an access card.
A. The DoD retiree civilian ID card replaced the DA Form 1602, and is plastic with no smart chip. If you are not enrolled in DEERS, then you will need to take your SF 50, or other form, showing your retirement action in order to have the plastic card issued. Attached is info on the Card I refer to above. I hope this responds to your query.
Q. I'm a retired NOAA Corps Officer. Am I authorized.
A. DOD Instruction 1015.10 contains policy on patronage to Military MWR programs. It authorizes "Members of the Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service and the Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on active duty" patrons of Military MWR programs.
However, it authorizes only MILITARY SERVICE retirees and their Family members continued patronage of Military MWR programs. The NOAA is a uniformed service, not a military service.
Unit Fund Support for Deployed
Q. My unit commander tasked me to find information on the MWR fund for units that are overseas. Can you help?
A. Go here for more information.
Travel and Tickets
Q. I'm planning a trip to Disney. Can you help?
A. While we are not a travel agency, travel services are delivered from on-base Leisure Travel and ITT offices located on most major military installations in the United States. In addition to military-priced tickets for Disney, the Leisure Travel and ITT offices can also assist with substantially discounted tickets for other attractions. They can also provide major savings on lodging - if you have not made other arrangements.
Q. Do you offer discount tickets for touring sites in NYC?
A. The on-base ITR and ITT offices have substantially discounted rates for many of the major attractions in NYC, including Madame Tussaud's and Ripley’s Believe It Or Not!, at Times Square; NYC Sightseeing (the double-decker hop-on/hop-off tour buses), New York Harbor Tours, the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island Ferry (departing from New Jersey), NBC Studio Tours, the New York City Pass which provides more than 50% savings off the gate price for many of New York City's most popular attractions such as: Empire State Building Observatory & Audio Tour; Guggenheim Museum, American Museum of Natural History including a Space Show, Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and an option of either 1 2-hour Circle Line Cruise or the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island, and a similar product which can be purchased for a specific number of days, The New York Explorer Card by Smart Destinations.
For Broadway Show tickets, you should check with the USO Office located on the second floor mezzanine of the Port Authority Bus Station on 8th Avenue & 46th Street. They sometimes have coupons available for specific shows. The half-price TKTS booth is located on Times Square. They open in the early afternoon (and in the mornings of days when matinees perform) and offer half-price tickets for that day's shows. Cash only accepted. When the window opens, an electronic sign posts the names of the shows that are available for that evening.
For lodging - commercial lodging in NYC is expensive. The on-base ITR and ITT offices have access to a variety of discounted hotels in Manhattan. There are also three military installations in the NYC area, but none are on Manhattan. The three on-base lodging options are:
There is also the privately operated Soldiers' Sailors' Marines' Coast Guard, and Airmen's Club at 283 Lexington. This is the lowest cost alternative in the NYC area. Facilities are basic, with only the VIP Quarters having bathrooms in the guest room. The telephone number is: 212-683-4353 or 1-800-678-8443, Web Site: www.ssmaclub.org.
Q. How can I find information about Space-A flights.
A. Information about Military Space-A flights can be found in a book published by Military Living Publications, and sold at most post exchanges, the "Military Space-A Air Travel Guide. If you can't find the book at your Post Exchange, go to the publisher's web site at www.militaryliving.com.
Q. I am inquiring about RV Rentals. Where can I rent one from and how do I get one?
A. Army MWR does not have a centralized list of RV rentals. I have heard that due to the expense of maintenance and insurance, there may not be any available, but check at your local RV park or Outdoor Rec program to be sure.
MWR Programs
Q. Can you tell me where to rent Tables and Chairs, Tents, and a inflatable bounce station?
A. You will have to contact the local MWR Outdoor Rec center. Go to My MWR and drill to your nearest installation.
Jobs
Q. I'm looking for employment in the recreation field.
A. All MWR civilian jobs are advertised online.
Q. What about Internships.
A. I don't know about any internships, however, from time to time there may be. Check out our online jobs page, and you will find a link to Gov't Internships. Also, check regular hires to, because most summer jobs have a small salary.
Q. I am interested in job opportunities over seas.
A. All MWR civilian jobs are advertised online, and job applications start there as well. These may include such locations within the Continental United States as well as Germany and Korea. Some overseas functions, such as in Afghanistan and Iraq, and other places, are handled by contractors and are not advertised on the above link. I've heard names such as KBR and Combat Support Associates in war areas.
Other
Q. I've got a condo for sale. I would also consider renting it. Can I list it on your website.
A. No. The place for this kind of information is http://ahrn.com/
Q. My 1st grade class is working on a project to prepare and send Holiday cards to Soldiers in Afghanistan or Iraq. They want to show their support. Can you send me addresses or information on where I can mail these cards.
A. Army MWR can not give out addresses. You understand this could be a risk to the privacy and security of our men and women in uniform. Try OurMilitary.mil - this may help you with other resources.
Q. I work at the Pentagon and am interested in discounted tickets.
A. For Pentagon Recreation services go to their MWR page.
Q. What is the policy on pets at MWR facilities.
A. Policy on service animals in food, beverage, and entertainment (FB&E) facilities is contained in AR 215-1, para. 8-24d(3), extract attached. There is one exception granted to this policy and that exception was approved to allow patrons to bring their dogs to the club house and designated portion of the dining area of the Rod and Gun Club in Heidelberg, Germany.
Provisions of this exception to policy are that dogs must be under the control of their owners and on a leash at all time. A sign must be posted at the Rod and Gun Club similar to "Dogs are to remain in the designated areas. Dogs are not allowed to eat off tables. Owners must remain with dogs at all times."
There is operating guidance/standards for Army lodging facilities (transient housing [temporary]). Guidance provides for 20% of all Family configured rooms be authorized for military personnel with pets. If there are no such rooms available at the time requested, then the Soldier is referred to boarding kennel facilities. MWR recreational lodging facilities have different rules as determined by the applicable garrison.
Armed Forces Recreation Centers (AFRC) do not allow animals unless they have separate cabins. There are five (5) AFRCs (Hale Koa Hotel, Hawaii; Edelweiss Lodge and Resort, Germany; Dragon Hill Center and Lodge, Korea; Shades of Green, Florida; and Cape Henry Inn and Beach Club, Virginia). The only AFRC with cabins is the one in Virginia.
Q. I have a really great band, and I want to talk to someone about setting up a tour of Army posts?
