      The 2018 Guest Showcase production will be the critically-acclaimed, one-man show,"Dodging Bullets"

      "Dodging Bullets" will be presented at 4:00 pm, Sunday, Oct. 7 at KMC Onstage, Kleber Kaserne, Kaiserslautern. The performance free and seating is open.

 The Story Of "Dodging Bullets"

      On his sabbatical leave during the summer of 2004, David Barker was up against an artistic block.  He needed to develop a new solo show that was personal and biographical.  But with life approaching 50 years where no major catastrophe or particularly unusual event had ever occurred, he had nothing to write about.  Barker, a theater professor at Arizona State University who is known for his solo mime performances, didn’t have to scratch his head too long for subject matter.  Two bullets, fired in rapid succession, changed everything.

     One of the bullets was aimed at him, and astonishingly, it missed. His sister was not as fortunate, because the second bullet – meant for her – hit her in the chest.

     The story of how his brother-in-law, “Dr. Jack,” happened to open fire on him and his sister became Barker’s sabbatical project – a one-man play titled Dodging Bullets.

     The play follows three story lines – Dr. Jack’s attack on his wife and Barker; Barker’s father’s emergency surgery and declining health; and Barker’s mother’s dementia.  Dr. Jack, a semi-retired, successful East Coast brain surgeon, had been abusing his wife for many years, and his wife finally moved out.
On the fateful day of the attack, Barker accompanied his sister and 15-year-old niece on a stop at the sister’s home to pick up asthma medication for his niece.

     “I went along to protect my sister,” Barker said. “We approached the house and Dr. Jack appeared at the front door and ordered me to leave. Dr. Jack is a high-strung control freak, so when I refused to leave he attacked me.  We grappled briefly and he ran back into the house. My sister, niece and I were in complete shock. He came back with a gun and began to fire.”

     The rest of the story is a dramatist’s dream, a soap opera come true. The SWAT team arrives, snipers are placed on the roofs of the houses across the street, and Dr. Jack stays holed up for four hours, but finally turns himself in and is booked into the county jail.  Dr. Jack’s sister bails him out, but he is arrested again for trying to buy a handgun and spends the next 10 months in federal prison.  Shortly after his release he marries an Episcopal priest but he still had not faced his attempted murder indictments.  

     “It’s invigorating to perform this show because everything actually happened. I’m not performing about imaginary circumstances as I usually do” said Barker, who also works as an actor and fight choreographer.  He knew early on that the traumatic experience would make for vivid storytelling.  "My sister was approached by Maury Povich and 'The Montel Williams Show,' but she declined," he says. "She said she was holding out for 'Oprah.' " 

     David Barker plays 10 different roles including his mother in this compelling drama.  Dodging Bullets includes mature themes and may not be appropriate for all audiences.

       David Barker (Writer and performer) is an award-winning actor, director and fight choreographer. Also an accomplished mime, his work has been featured in numerous publications including From The Greek Mimes To Marcel Marceau And Beyond, Shanghai Theatre Magazine, Mime Journal and Phoenix Magazine. He graduated from Duquesne University with a B.S. in Education and from Rutgers University's Mason Gross School of the Arts with an M.F.A. in Theatre Arts.  His credits include national and international tours, Broadway, Off-Broadway, regional theatre, international festivals and television. He conducted master classes at universities, conservatories and public schools throughout the country and in London, Athens and Shanghai. He taught at the University of California at Santa Barbara, Douglass College and Scottsdale Community College. He is a Professor of Theatre at Arizona State University where he teaches acting and movement. He is the author of Connected Motion: A Common Sense Approach To Movement Training For Actors. He and his wife live in Tempe, Arizona and they have four children and four grandchildren. Ron Ziegler is the Festivals Coordinator for the American Association of Community Theatre. He directed many productions for theatres across the US, most frequently for the Des Moines Playhouse, where he served as Associate Director. He was the first Artistic/Managing Director for the Des Moines Playhouse’s Kate Goldman Children's Theatre. Ron founded and managed the Iowa Fringe Festival and was the first executive director for Orlando (FL) Repertory Theatre. He is a past president of the American Association of Community Theatre; was named an AACT Fellow; and served twice as facilitator for the National Artistic Directors Conference and twice for the Managing Directors Conference. His directing credits include Hairspray, Becky’s New Car, Legally Blonde, The Who's Tommy, Jesus Christ Superstar and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? among many others. Ron has adjudicated many state and regional theatre festivals across the US including the 2007 National AACTFest in Charlotte, NC.  He also served as adjudicator six times for the One Act/One Play Festivals and twice for the Tournament of Plays.

Kathy Pingel was the Director of Education and Youth Programming at the Des Moines Community Playhouse; Artistic Director of the Kate Goldman Children's Theatre and is now a free-lance stage director and teacher. She holds a BA in theatre from Eastern Michigan University where she studied with Virginia Koste and a MA from Northwestern University in Performance Studies where she worked with Frank Galati. She also holds an MA in teaching from Northwestern. As Education Director of the Des Moines Playhouse, Kathy piloted many new programs including classes for students on the autism spectrum, a repertory company for senior radio performers, and workshops to teach creative problem-solving to corporate teams. She also created Spotlight: Literacy, a program designed to help teachers expand language arts activities with trips to the Goldman Theatre.  Kathy has adjudicated at the state and regional, national and international levels for the American Association of Community Theatre. She was an adjudicator for the Army Entertainment One Page Play Festival in 2015 and in 2017.

Paul Bourne is the Artistic Director of the Menagerie Theatre Company, Cambridge, England and of the international Hotbed Festival of New Writing. Former Artistic Director of Center Stage, New York. Paul was the first Judge of the One Act Play Festival in 1996 and has been involved in Army Entertainment for many years running master classes and supporting programs in Europe and The US. He has directed dozens of community plays and over seventy professional productions in ten different countries. His work has ranged from productions on the fringe to major international productions. Highlights include the world premiere of Tennessee Williams’ Guignol in New York and the world touring production of the Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged (out of Washington DC). He is on the faculty of The University of Cambridge and Skolkovo University in Moscow. Paul is the creator of the US Army/IMCOM Europe Entertainment performance workshop, “It’s No Joke! Act Against Bullying.” This workshop addresses the issues of bullying among youth and is being presented by Entertainment Branches in cooperation with US Army CYSS at all US Army Garrisons in Germany and Italy.

Dörte Jensen is professional stage combat instructor and fight director. She fell in love with idea of stage combat during medical school and went off to train with the British Academy of Stage and Screen Combat and the Society of American Fight Directors and is among the first teachers for Stage Combat Deutschland, an organization she co-founded.  By day an associate managing editor in medical publishing, by night and on weekends it is Dörte’s mission to keep actors safe and tell stories through fights. Over the past 13 years she has taught for the German amateur theater association, various drama schools and at workshops in Banff, Canada, and Chicago, Il. Dörte won a 2017 US Army Entertainment TOPPERS award for her stage combat choreography for A Streetcar Named Desire at the Stuttgart Theater Center. Her fight direction credits include a variety of German community and professional theaters as well as The Stuttgart Theatre Center, The Ramstein Razz Ma Tazz Family Theater and the Alliance Players Brunssum.

 Vic Phillipson has worked for Army Entertainment for 25 years.  He was an Entertainment Director in Giessen from 1992 until 1995, and then in Heidelberg from 1995 until 2000.  Since moving to Norway in 2000, he has worked as a technical consultant for the program. He has served as the Technical Director and Stage Manager for the annual IMCOM Europe One Act/One Page Play Festivals and the Tournament of Plays (TOPPERs) Awards Show and Ceremony for over 20 years. When not consulting for Army Entertainment, Vic works as a Port Agent for European Cruise Service at points of call for cruise ships all along the southern coast of Norway.
